10 Essential Maintenance Tools For Every House Owner

You should leave electrical problems to the professionals. It can get dangerous and only those who have extensive experience know how to properly deal with them. However, there are just some things you need to do by yourself. You just can’t keep calling the electrician over the smallest issues and concerns you have.

As per John from Jarvis Electrical and electrician in Brisbane, it’s always handy to have some knowledge of electrical appliances you have in your home and to have some tools at home though you should call a professional to fix anything for electrical safety reasons.

Before you could deal with anything electrically related, you are going to need the right tools. Here are what you should have in your toolbox to be prepared for all kinds of situations.

Tape Measure

It doesn’t mean you are dealing with electrical issues; all your tools should be sophisticated. The tape measure may be simple, but it is essential for almost every job, whether it may be trying to fit the right wire or knowing where to cut.

Utility Knife

You are going to need to cut a wire or peel off the rubber insulation. There are specific tools for those, but if they are nowhere to be found, a utility knife or a box cutter is versatile enough to fill in the gap.

Screwdrivers

Keep a bunch of screwdrivers at hand, because it is common to find screws with electrical jobs. They can be just holding wires in place or they can be a part of an entire electrical assembly.

Pliers

Along with screwdrivers, it is also important to keep a wide collection of pliers. But if you need to prioritize one, put your attention on the long-nose pliers.

Remember, you are dealing with thin steel wires. Pulling and shaping them with your fingers are close to impossible, not to mention dangerous.

Wire Strippers

If you have the budget and space in your toolbox, wire strippers are a great addition to your collection. While box cutters and pliers can fill the gap of their absence, this tool makes a lot of tasks easier and faster to do. Mainly, it peels off the insulation off of wires effortlessly, but can also create perfect wire trims.

Wire Crimpers

Another tool that does a specific job. While most of what it does can be done by the tools already in this list, it makes everything a lot easier and more convenient, not to mention cleaner. What it does is crimp lugs or connection terminals into wires. Other than that, it can also strip wire insulation.

Do you really need it? No, but it does make a huge difference when dealing with circuitry and appliances. So, when you have the budget and space, consider having one in your arsenal of tools.

Non-Contact Voltage Tester

When dealing with electrical components, the first thing to keep in mind is safety first. While everything may seem fine to the naked eye, electric charges may be lingering around and can shock you at the first touch.

This is where a non-contact voltage tester comes in the picture. Operating on batteries, it is able to identify whether or not there is electricity lurking around. So, you know whether or not to take extra caution or proceed with ease.

Voltmeter or Multimeter

If you want to know if a circuitry is live, either a voltmeter or multimeter can do the job. It allows you to know whether or not a device is functional and be able to take the next steps to your electrical fix.

A multimeter is much more versatile. It can do a lot more things like reading resistance and current among many others. For a beginner, you are rarely going to find any use for this, but it does come in handy when you really need it. Also, you never know when an electrician won’t be bringing his, so it helps to have one on standby.

Flashlight

One last thing, a flashlight is something that is usually underappreciated because it cannot be specifically used to address an electrical concern. However, you cannot fix what you cannot see. And most electrical wiring and components are hidden in secluded corners and compartments where lighting can be scarce.

On a good month, you will be pulling out your tools at least once. While that may not seem like much and you start to contemplate on whether or not buying and stocking up all these tools is going to be worth it, remember that it will be impossible to do the job without them. So, you can make that rare occasion a breeze to fix or a nightmare that can potentially last for days.
